12th JANUARY – MONDAY
ARCHEOLOGICAL SPEECH

Konstantinopolis beyond the historical peninsula, during the Late Antique and Byzantine periods: New Discoveries and Cultural Heritage Projects

The texture of Konstantinopolis, the largest metropolis of the Late Antiquity and Byzantine periods, spread well beyond the city walls. An extensive water works system dated to the Antique period, a “highway” connecting the city to Western Europe and cutting across The Thrace Region from North to South and an inner defence system established around the outskirts of the city are some of the less well known aspects of the metropolis. The space that lays beyond the city walls was also now known to have been covered with residential areas, large agricultural areas and a multitude of monasteries. This lecture aims at exploring the relatively unknown regions and remains of Konstantinopolis which lay beyond the city walls.  The subject matter of this talk will detail a city that is well beyond the formally recognized and known boundaries of the city and aims to familiarize listeners with the reality of a metropolis which extended so much further than previously known and which should be protected as regions of precious cultural heritage.

Moderator: Gül Pulhan
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Alessandra Ricci (Koç University)
Location and time: Yapı Kredi Sermer Çifter Hall at 6.30 p.m.

The lecture will be delivered in English and simultaneously interpreted into Turkish.
